Protecting Seniors Online with Helios Secure Web Gateway

Empowering Seniors with Safe and Secure Internet Access

Senior citizens are increasingly targeted by online scams, resulting in significant financial losses. Here are some current statistics and insights:

Financial Losses

  • Total Losses: Seniors over 60 lost $564 million due to internet-based scams, including social media, websites, online ads, and pop-ups in 2024
  • Annual Losses: Elder fraud scams result in an estimated annual loss of $28.3 billion, with a significant portion (72%) taken by individuals close to the victims, such as family members or friends

Common Scam Types

  • Investment Scams: These are the most common scams targeting seniors, with losses rising 175% from the previous year, totaling $404 million in 2022
  • Romance Scams: Losses from romance scams for those aged 60 and over rose 13% between 2021 and 2022, amounting to $240 million
  • Government Impersonation and Sweepstakes Scams: These are also prevalent, often involving robocalls and other deceptive tactics

Reporting and Vulnerability

  • Underreporting: Seniors are less likely to report losing money to fraud, which means actual losses could be higher than reported
  • Health Factors: Older adults in poorer mental or physical health, or those with memory issues or disabilities, are more vulnerable to scams

Methods of Contact

  • Phone Scams: The phone remains the top method scammers use to contact seniors, with higher median losses reported from phone scams compared to online scams
  • Online Scams: Despite phone scams resulting in higher median losses, the majority of scams now originate online

Payment Methods

  • Gift Cards: Scammers often request payments via gift cards, which have become increasingly common since 2020

Prevention and Support

  • National Elder Fraud Hotline: The U.S. Department of Justice provides a hotline for reporting elder fraud, offering support and resources to victims.

These statistics underscore the growing threat of online scams targeting senior citizens and highlight the need for increased awareness and preventive measures.
